@Dan UK My experience differs from yours. I don't find electricity expensive in the UK. I've got Octopus Energy at home and am paying 10 pence per kwh to charge my iX on my driveway. I'm doing up to 1500 miles a month and it's saving me a fortune vs running a petrol car of equivalent size and performance. Throw in the various discounts on rapid charging that BMW themselves offer and even other providers, and public charging is deeply discounted.

I found insurance was reasonable for the iX too, by London standards, given the value of the car.
not really sure what you mean by my experience. I’m just reporting the state of the market in the uk. None of the cars I looked at starting in jan have sold. with your mileage I can see the win on fuel costs as long as only charging at home, although what that will do to the cars residual value and ability to sell it won’t be good so hope it’s leased!

Have to agree with EJ on this. I’m also on Octopus at 8 pence for 5 hours at night with two EV’s. Each to their own, but I don’t find people disliking the iX in the flesh and what is there to compare at the moment from an all round package. Looking at an iX50 and opting for an i3s is an interesting shift and not one I would look at as the i3 just wouldn’t work for us and the hooch travelling to southern Spain from the UK 😂 The iX soaks up the miles without missing a beat. The market is what it is, we can’t change it or influence it. Cars depreciate, I suck it up and enjoy the car, life is too short…

yeah it’s not a direct substitute. Getting a traditional suv as well as personally don’t want to have to charge on a journey, so for short runs and parking in towns which is what we mostly do it made more sense.

anyway just reporting the market and I was literally there to collect an ix50 (but dealer didn’t prep properly) so still a fan, so don’t shoot the messenger!

I got my car in January with 8000 km (5000 miles) as a dealer demo unit. It showed ~20kWh/100km since factory (Germany weather, April to December). My personal experience in our pretty cold winter is somewhat different — numbers currently vary from 30kWh/100km to 39kWh/100km. Heat pump, while definitely is the most efficient way to heat up the interior of our cars, eats a TON of electricity. I have an air-to-air unit in my house, and throughout the winter it was consuming up to 10x more than it did while cooling during the summer.

I'm looking forward to May-June to see what the consumption will be then.

I just want to get near 200miles, not 120 when I drive it like Miss Daisy.
We totally agree with you.... have been missold the car by bmw.... all they boast about is getting 220 to 250 miles on a full charge, oh hang on, they forget to say the weather has to be 70 degrees plus outside, you cant use the heater/aircon, drive with misted windows cause you darent put the window demisters on!....or have the radio on or charge your phone..... then you may get over 200!!!!

Your issue is with NCAP, not with BMW. All vehicles are rated using the same criteria. The issues you complain about also apply to ICE vehicles. Do NCAP ratings somehow, magically, work only for ICE and not for EV?

US EPA ratings are about 20% lower than NCAP and are far more real-world. Perhaps the solution isn't complaining that your iX 40 doesn't achieve NCAP ratings (what car does), but changing the criteria of NCAP tests to make the results more reliable.

My iX 50 exceeds its EPA rating by almost 20%. The result of regulatory testing is what sets the objective expectation, not the manufacturer. I don't know anyone who buys a car expecting to get the rated range down to the mile. That's ridiculous and totally unfair, as nobody would ever do that with an ICE car.

@pilkyt12 I'm getting 220 miles regularly on a full charge at the moment in the UK with my iX40, even with it being 3-5C and my windows are not misted up either.

Couple of weeks ago there were a couple of days where the temperature here in London was around 14C and then I got 220 miles out of my iX - wheras before it is around 190-200 (at lower temperatures) - so as mentioned, the weather conditions play a big role - no surprises here. Also, I used to do little trips into the city centre and with that behaviour it is hard to tell what the range is/can be. I drove a couple of times to Camber (seaside) and back and around Kent/East Sussex and this resulted in better range numbers as well - i.e. drive the car!!! (and enjoy it) and let the battery go to around 10% capacity left...after doing this, my range also seemingly increased. So I am not worried or dissapointed at all - I am sure when the weather gets better I'll start seeing 220+ ranges...

Morale of my story - I've stopped fretting about the range and am just enjoying this amazing car....

Hi,
I’m looking to order an iX 40 and was wondering about battery range.
I’ve been driving a Polestar 2 for 2.5 years which manages about 230 miles in summer and 180 miles in Winter.
How does the iX40 compare please?

Thanks :)

Please just get the 50. Having more range than less is always preferable. You also need to account for at least 10% range degradation over the next 5 years.

That's easy to say. In Germany iX40 costs like iX50 in US (taking taxes into account). And iX50 is extra 30K. I guess the prices are similar in other parts of Europe.

I don't understand why cars produced in Germany and shipped to US are sold for 20-25% less there. Others say: BMW requests as much as it can in every land. As if we Europeans were richer than our American fellows ;)

The 50 is double the price for me, £650 per month vs £1312 per month
Yeah, I was thinking about 50 myself, but settled on 40. 50 is just too much in Europe. Maybe I’ll consider swapping for a second-hand one in a year. If you are not driving across country daily and have an access to easy charging, it’s absolutely no big deal. My average daily commute across city is about 40km (25miles).

I do just a handful of trips per year which test the 200+ range, so it’s not worth paying the extra for the 50.

Also, I’ve gone for the iX 40 over a Polestar 3, as it’s slightly cheaper. But the P3 is much cheaper than the 50 and comes with a great spec & performance, so if I had more budget/range requirement I would be going for that.

I have no issue with the 40 range in the UK. Several 300+ mile trips each way per year and usually one trip to South of Spain at 750 miles each way on the Spainish roads. Regarding degradation of 10%, my 4 year old e-tron has not noticeably degraded anywhere near that much so I don’t factor deg at all… iX 50 would have been another £20k. I just can’t justify that. Non air suspension suits me just fine on the 40 and it is plenty fast enough on our congested roads.

Sorry, folks, I was not aware that it was that much more expensive. I assumed, like with Tesla, the difference between a smaller and larger battery would be $15k or less.
