I asked this question recently and the answer appears to be NO. There is no way to connect the vehicle to wifi other than its own, secretive cellular data network that we cannot control. I thought it would be like my Tesla in this respect but it is not.

You're talking about the eSim functionality which is not what the poster is asking.

That is correct - no WiFi connection from the car to your home, or any other network other than BMW's server network from the internal SIM (separate, as noted, from the eSIM).

Well that stinks! I can’t communicate between the app and my phone when the car is at home.

I have the same problem as my underground garage has limited or no mobile coverage....but it has great wifi

So can folks explain this? There's a setting in my BMW app that says download over WI fi only...but the car can't connect to WI fi, right? So...what am I not understanding?

That's because updates download to your phone, and then from your phone to the car over multiple trips It's honestly quite backward
