Besides the physical key I understand you can use your smartphone as a digital key. But is there also a credit card size digital key like Tesla uses? The type that would fit into a cc slot in your wallet?

My question was relative to key cards. Have not gotten my IX yet. Due in a few weeks. If you only get 1 key card, can you purchase another? Looking to use our iPhones as our primary digital key with a key card as backup in case phone looses charge or other circumstances where digital key would not work. Prefer not to carry the key fob itself. How to get a second key card?

The key card works almost like a physical key, and as far as I know can't be duplicated - 1 key, 1 car, but you can share the phone digital key with other users:

It's a little complicated, but relatively straightforward.

You really only need your phone, but the key card is handy if you didn't want to carry a fob or phone for some reason, or lose either.

You might have missed this:

The Digital Key can be shared and added to the recipient's respective Wallet on a compatible Android or iPhone with an iX 50 or M60, and it can be restricted or include all available features. It only works with specific phones with a UWB (Ultra Wide Band) chip, but I can assure you it works with a Samsung S22 Ultra Android phone, because I and my spouse have one.

Thank you. My question was relative to the key card not the digital key on smartphone. I understand from others that you only get 1 key card and only 1 key card can be assigned to 1 vehicle. I find that odd. My Tesla has as many key cards as you want. My wife use our smartphones but we each carry a digital card should the smartphone be compromised. Trying to get away from having to carry the key fob.

The physical credit card sized digital card works well but I have moved onto using my phone as it is even simpler. Not sure why technically you can't have two credit card keys if you can have two key fobs. Doesn't sound like much of a technical challenge.

@fatphoca BMW manual says keep the keycard on you even if you are using the digital key on your phone, as a backup.

I was unaware of the card, thanks to all. From my limited usage at 2am, this only appears to work on the drivers door and to operate the vehicle it needs to be placed on the charging tray. Is this all correct? Anything else I should be aware of?

All correct, and I don't think most users would use the card consistently as the key. It's handy because it fits neatly in your wallet or pocket as a backup, but not actually a full function fob (FFF? :p). If you're an Android user, unfortunately the phone digital key works the same - open driver's door by touch, drive with it on the charging pad - but like many I have my phone on me all the time with easy access. iPhone users get the Digital Key Plus functions which more accurately mirror the key fob.

When I used to use the key card it opened all doors and the boot if it was in my wallet in my pocket. I never had to put the card on the charging tray, just kept it in my pocket. It works well but I prefer to keep one less card on me.

Good rundown of how the digital keys work - at least in the US. The key card in the US has no remote functions - touch the door to open, place in the charging tray to drive (and you only have 30s from opening the door). iD7 but it applies to iD8 as well:
