Distorted phone audio through car speakers (B&W)

I have an intermittent issue where the audio on phone calls is extremely crackly/distorted to the point where any speech is unintelligible. The crackling only occurs when someone is speaking on the other end (so when they're quiet, I don't hear any crackling). I haven't yet figured out whether I sound distorted to the other side.

I don't think it is down to a poor phone signal, as the sound is nothing like you usually get with that. Phone (Pixel 6 Pro) is connected wirelessly via Bluetooth and Android Auto.

I've tried re-pairing the phone to the car, but this hasn't resolved it.

This can happen on incoming calls and outgoing calls, but doesn't happen every time. E.g. I made a call from the car earlier and it was crackling so I hung up, redialed and it was fine.

Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions for fixing it?

So I've now worked out that the distortion only happens on the first call (incoming or outgoing) that is made after the car is switched on. All subsequent calls are fine. I've done a bit more digging and I've found a thread in the 5 series bimmerpost forum where others are experiencing the same problem with different phones, but there is no clear solution yet...

Solution: First thing every morning, call your mother-in-law.

More digging found a suggestion to change the power optimisation settings on an Android Bluetooth system app to fix this. While this initially seemed to work, it ultimately hasn't.

The fix I have settled on when a call starts with distortion is to press 'transfer to phone' on the control display and then 'transfer to car' straight after. This gets the car and phone to sort out their differences, and it works fine.

Would be interested to know what it is about my iX or phone that means they don't set up correctly with each other...
