Anyone have info on the BMW wall charger gen 3 which supposedly can do up to 22kw? I think I found an Australian spec sheet and it has a max of 50amp? So is it really possible to get to 22kw with only 50 amp?

EDIT: Sorry, just realised you're in Canada, so this info may not be relevant.

I have one of these for sale, unneeded as I already have level 2 chargers at home.

Sadly, no, you can't get 22kW from 50amp, you'll need a 3 phase supply for that. Not sure how easy that is to get in AU, but NZ it require your local lines company to run new lines from poles to the house which is rather expensive and I decided uneconomic. To be honest a 7.4kW single phase 32A (230V) circuit will charge the car overnight anyway so it's not really necessary.

Instructions and dip switch settings for supply for the Gen 3 Wallbox can be found on the BMW NZ site: BMW Electromobility: Support BMW Wallbox Gen 3 | BMW.co.nz

Thanks folks for the help. I'm trying to decide if to wait for the gen 3 to future proof (up to 22kw) or simply go with regular 48/50A charger (wallbox or chargepoint) to just get to the 11kw. And I'm just trying to educate myself to understand how can this gen 3 gives 22kw output when other 50a only gets to 11. 😅

General speaking frequent fast charging is not beneficial to longevity of battery pack. This is general thinking for Tesla owners.

IX is too new to have any data to back this. if want to be on safer side 11kw probably is better in this sense.

50 amps of current on a single phase 220 V power supply gives you an 11kV output (50*220=11,000). However drawing a 50 amp current on a single circuit is huge. Most houses are limited to 30 amp breakers and the 11kV supply draws about 28 amps on each phase. Getting an 11kV supply (the most an iX can take) from a 3 phase supply is much more realistic. A 22kV supply from a 3 phase power supply draws about 57.7 amps from each phase. This is extremely high and not possible in most domestic household supplies. But is typically possible in commercial buildings that often have 100 amp breakers.

for a house I would stick with an 11kV maximum supply

I have read in the US the most you can get is about 8kV supply

Hope this helps

Depends on which wallbox you get and how it's installed - my ChargePoint on a NEMA 14-50 plug delivers 9.5kw on a 50A circuit (40A delivered on a continuous load, at 80% of the circuit rating per code); hardwired it would deliver the full 11kw the car can take.

Thanks folks. Sounds like in order to get 22kw, a 3 phase is a must. I guess I will be sticking to the current crop of 50A single phase hardwire charger, with a 60A breaker and 6 gauge wires.

In EU, 3 phases need 400V between phases at 32A for 22 kW.
3 phases + N will give you 230V between N and 1 phase, 400 V between 2 phases.
3 (ph) x 230 (V) x 32 (A) = 22 080 W or 22 kW.
The iX is charging in EU on monophase up to 32A -> 230 V x 32 A = 7360 W
In 3 phases the current is limited to 16A wich gives you 3 (ph) x 230 (V) x 16 (A) = 11 040 W or 11 kW.

After installing the service APP, it asks me for a pairing code. Where can I see the pairing code? There is no monitor on the unit; where can I get the pairing code to pair the wall charger with my iPhone? PLEASE HELP.
