Idrive 8.5/9 and the IX

any info on whether the IX will upgrade to idrive 8.5? I’m on the verge of buying a 2nd hand early car and given the debacle with parking assistant pro not working with pre March cars, I’m even more concerned that 8.5 might not be ported to early cars. This would likely mean no meaningful software updates and investment from BMW in the old idrive 8 stack As they will already have to support 8.5 and 9 on cars they are selling new.

I have to say I’m very dismayed to hear I drive 8 is already superseded. I have zero trust in car companies to support sold cars with different tech. Enough to make me just get the substantially cheaper model Y - I don’t to want to drive a new model around with old tech for this money, nor take the residuals hit that would accompany that.

N.b. apparently they have already said not all idrive 8 cars can be upgraded to 8.5 but I’ve only seen the current 3 series mentioned.

Today the choice is between better software (Tesla) or a better car (anyone else). I picked the better car which is why I'm in this forum. The software you interact with only occasionally. The competence of the vehicle's design and manufacture, however, you experience constantly.
That’s debatable
Have you seen the current state of ‘Tesla Vision’ and also the auto wipers running in full blue sky sun shine days 🤣

The parking software is a complete joke.

OMG my friend said his Model Y wipers wouldn't turn off! They were going full tilt yesterday here in Arizona with not a cloud in the sky! He said there is no way to turn off the Auto wiper function while Autopilot is on. When you disable Autopilot, the wipers stay in Auto mode and keep wiping. Turning them off requires diving 2 or 3 levels deep into the OS menu

I thought he was going to have an aneurism. The overwhelming opinion, even among Tesla owners, is that vision sucks balls. What little stalk functionality currently exists will be gone once the Highland refresh starts shipping. No stalks.

In the i5 video inxs posted, the BMW 'guy' says 8.5 will be available to all who have 8.0...at 4min 30 secs into the video...no?
In the i5, very possibly. Did you have a question regarding the iX? :D

Don't all i5's come with 8.5 already? I understood he meant all BMW's with 8.0...including iX's... no?
No. And a subject of much discussion here and elsewhere. The latest understanding is that only iX models built on or after 3/23 (still up for debate) are compatible with 8.5 - and only with the newest head unit.
Every i5 will already come with the new Headunit and OS 8.5 preinstalled.
iXs with the new Headunit starting from production 03/2023 will get OS 8.5 via OTA starting from July.
iXs with the new Headunit starting from production 07/2023 will come with OS 8.5 from factory.
iXs with the old Headunit before production 03/2023 will NOT get any updates to OS 8.5

I hope I made this very clear. This is the official information.
No Update to OS 8.5 doesn't mean that OS 8 will not be updated or further improved. For me OS8.5 doesn't have any new features but shifts the UI more to OS 9.

@inxs Airconsole gaming is only available with OS 8.5, so that's something existing iX owners won't get access to, unless they port it backwards to OS 8.0

Sorry my post was a bit misleading. I said "for me". I see this as a nearly useless, nice to have gimmick, but definitely no "feature".

But you are totally correct, this is exclusive for new Headunit AND OS 8.5 because of the more potent hardware.
I understand that OS 9 will be based on Android rather than Linux. I wonder if this is why they need a new Headunit and the older units can’t be used.
To be honest I think the Headunit will be the same, as is features a modern Snapdragon ARM processor. OS 9 is not supporting iDrive Knob anymore and therefore has a different Interface/Input Concept.
None of the ADAS systems use the Snapdragon processor anyway. That's just for the OS/UI. The ADAS uses a completely different, walled-off system provided by MobilEye. Unless BMW are also updating the ADAS processing system, there is no reason future ADAS functionality cannot be added.

I know this has probably been answered previously, but I am wondering if anyone knows if it will be possible to update headunits for iX builds prior to 3/23.

No one knows. It's certainly nothing that has been announced by BMW. But the current consensus on the BMW EV forums is that this is unlikely.

Out of curiosity, can I ask, what specific feature are you looking for with the new head unit?
I was hoping maybe with new headunit I could upgrade to the new Driving assistant with hands free over 40 Mph. Like many others on the forum, had I known BMW was going to orphan early adopters I probably would have waited to buy. I love the car, but came from Tesla and was used to things being updated as long as possible.

Ah yes, I used to be in the same camp as you. I was planning to wait for the '24 model just for this feature.
However, after owning my '23 iX for 3 months now, I'm very satisfied with the current system. On long trips (3+ hours), I use my knee or the back of my left hand to keep the friction on the wheel, and I rarely get any nags. It's so relaxing I just listen to the great sound system, and literally forget that I'm driving. Most importantly, I'm not tired at all when I reach my destination.
I love using the 40 mph Traffic Jam Assistant when stuck in heavy traffic in Los Angeles, and sometimes I can go more than an hour without touching the wheel. However, if I look away to talk to a passenger, or check my phone, or even momentary hold my coffee cup over my face, the system starts nagging me. This happens more often than I would like. So, the "hands-off" system in some ways can cause some added stress due to surprises. Now I tend to keep a finger on the wheel now at all times just so I don't have to think about it. It's actually less anxiety provoking for me this way!

For me Highway Assistant is moot. There's no way I'm taking my eyes off the road, my hands off the wheel or my attention away from what I'm doing navigating and directing the car for more than a few seconds traveling at 120 feet per second. Other features with iD8.5 might be practical and useful. Barreling down the highway with me in the front seat behind the wheel, oblivious to everything and .05 seconds away from anything that might impact the front of the car and potentially crush me at any time, is not one of them. Particularly after reading the accounts on this forum of "I scraped my mirror," or "I curbed my wheel" using Parking Assist.
