Hi All,

I finally picked up our iX 50 this afternoon. All went well until we were done for the evening and were reversing in to the garage. We noticed the rear view camera suddenly didn’t work. Then we noticed the touch screen was not responding and the drive controller also was not working. Turned the car on and off and even got out, locked it but still no joy.

Temp was 78F and clear, 145 miles on the car and has the latest S/W updates (2 Stop sales for air bag and parking). Has anybody had this issue? Not sure how to reboot idrive but it seems like an idrive S/W issue.

Thanks for any assistance. Very disappointing end to the day.😱

One thing is for sure, it's going to be hard to do a power off/on reboot, because the system is connected to a big battery. That said, I wonder if that system is run off the small battery in the front. If you can get the hood up, you could try that.

This is an issue for BMW to deal with - they will have to come out and fix it without you doing anything (including trying to reboot) - you will just have to deal with the deflation and disappointment whilst they deal with it. That is disappointing.

Thanks Coconut. You can’t open the hood unfortunately.

I went back out to the car and all is ok again. However, I have concerns it could happen again. I recorded the issue on my phone and will drop by the dealer tomorrow.

Standard iDrive reboot is to hold down the Volume Control button for about 30s, then release (normally the screen will go blank when it resets, then restart). It's a big computer - and it will need a restart occasionally just like your PC when its electrons get scrambled. I need to reset iD7 probably about once every six months or so in my X5.

Hi Paladin,

Thanks for your response. I tried that but it didn’t work as there was no response from the physical controller. I saw that this can work for issues within i drive but it didn’t work for me when the whole system was frozen.

Sometimes takes a looong press of the button, but a reboot method that sometimes works when the standard reboot fails: Make sure key is in the car and the charging cable is unplugged. Press start button 3 times quickly, with foot off the brake pedal. Push and hold the volume button more than 30s. And it might take more than one reboot to correct whatever problem was occuring. Sometimes worth a try....

Ok, thanks Paladin. I’ll have to try that if this happens again. I’ve never had any issues with drive in my previous 9 BMW’s. I have an i4 on order which I should have mid September, also with drive 8. Hoping this is not an issue with this car too.

You can open the hood (cables are under the dash), but with no support pistons there is every possibility of damaging the paint on hood or A pillar. Best left to the dealer....
Yeah, I don’t want to damage a one day old $97K car, so I called the dealer. My regular CA and SA are both out today, so I left a message for the Sales Manager.

I spoke with the Service Director and while he was surprised to see that it wouldn’t reset with the volume button pressed, he suggested I bring it into the dealer on Monday so that they can see if any error codes have been recorde.

Otherwise, the car is fantastic. The HK sound system is incredible and I’m an audiophile. I can only imagine what the B&W sounds like. I find that this is a very relaxing car to drive and yet has excellent performance if required. I really wouldn’t see the need for the M60 but I’m sure that’s fun. The car exceeds my expectations and is worth the price. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to afford a car like this and it was definitely worth the wait!! Other members have always stated that you will enjoy this car and they are so right.

Similar happened to me, no sound at all. Assistant can't hear, stereo wouldn't play, apple play and phone wouldn't connect. Did the hard reset and all fixed, but...all setting gone and had to be redone.

You can open the hood. There is a release cable on both side under the dash by the kick panels. You have to disengage both of them. Note that the hood won't stay up without a prop rod, but you can get under there.

Hi hilld. I brought the car up to the dealer and there were multiple software error codes which indicated that the car has to be reprogrammed. There was a new release on Saturday, so I’ll get that. They also showed me the two release tags for the hood and showed me what’s up front.

The Service Director gave me a loaner 7 series which was nice. I should have it back tomorrow.

The Service Dept tried to download the new SW today but it failed half way through. They contacted German Service sport who enquired about my wife and my phones types ann OS. Both are running iOS 15.2. They seem to think my wife’s phone may have been the issue. However, they are going to need to do a SW upgrade from Germany as opposed to my local dealer. Hence, my car remains in the shop :(

So, I got the car back from the dealer late this afternoon. All is working normally after the German assisted software download. Fingers crossed that we won’t se. the freeze issue again.
