Driving along the iDrive screen will suddenly go blank, losing phone, sat nav etc. A little message appears in the driver console behind steering wheel saying something along the lines of 'service temporarily lost' but as I'm driving couldn't take a picture. It kicks back to life after about 2 mins but losing sat nav and phone call, so not great. Its happened to me 3 times in 5 days since getting my IX 40 last week. I have called BMW assistance from the iDrive and they suggested an OTA software update. I've done that, but only yesterday and not driven may miles since, so not sure its fixed it yet. Interested to hear back from anybody else if its happened to them.

Hi
Yes I have had this happen to me several times. I have the IX 50 and was one of the first to take delivery in US on April 5. It seems to reboot itself and then comes back to life. When I take it in for the safety recall for the airbags, I am going to have them check that out too

yep. The notices went out last week...I was actually aware of it from almost the day after I picked up mine in early April. Its not a major safety issue (that is why i waited). It has to do with the air bag light not coming on to show active. They explained to me the the airbag is fine and still will function,,,but it needs a software tweak

I've had this happen as well. I pressed the volume knob on the center control for 30ish seconds to reboot the iDrive. Worked and everything came back.

Have you noticed the screen go blank when you drive by the same location or does it happen randomly?

I was thinking about starting a new thread, but since you have a blank screen problem, I am going to go ahead and describe in detail what is happening when my iX 50 screen goes blank. Foremost, let me be clear what I am describing is a system failure, primarily involving the the iDrive Screen, and a number of affiliated computerized services. The dashboard computer screen, however, remains unaffected and I can still control the screen in front of the steering wheel with the controls on the steering wheel. I also have two youtube videos showing how the screen completely goes blank as the iDrive system computer shuts down and then proceeds to reboot. I might post the link if enough people ask for it. I can also confirm with 100% accuracy that my system failure happens everytime I drive by THE SAME LOCATION everyday. And it does not really matter what time of day or day of the week I drive by the same location.

My theory is that Continental Technologies who designed BMW's entire cockpit dashboard with embedded computers has a dedicated computer board with SOC for the media control unit which includes the iDrive8 OS and WIRELESS connections which includes WiFi throughout the car, 5G services, wireless audio and the iDrive screen:

Continental Technology in the BMW iX Electric Vehicle Creates an Innovative User Experience. <-- click this link to read more.

The point where my screen fails is nearby police and a high security zone. A friend has suggested that Long Range "LoRa" 857 Mhz (unregulated frequency band) Police communications is jamming the computer, causing it to fail. I have not yet confirmed this. I am considering the purchase of a spectrometer to analyse signal frequencies at the exact point where my car computer shuts down. Anyway, once I drive beyond the point where the media control computer fails, it then reboots.

Also I had my car serviced at BMW to have the car computers reprogrammed - which included the software upgrade that also fixes the airbag bug. The reprogramming does NOT solve the problem with the computer shutting down and causing the iDrive screen going blank, wireless services shutting down, etc. I can also tell you that due to the navigation application failing as the system computer completely turns off while the car is operating, drivers can seriously be at risk of an accident. This happened to me the first several times my computer system shut down until I figured out exactly where the computer would always shut down.

Anyway, the folks at BMW engineering HQ and Continental technologies probably know exactly why the computer system fails and the screen goes blank. I am not so sure that BMW legal is aware of the flawed design/engineering for a recall.

Let me know your thoughts...(technical, legal, etc.)

It appears random and it happened to me approx. 3 times in the first 5 days I had the IX. None since the OTA update prompted when I called BMW Assist but haven't done lots of miles yet so not conclusive that its fixed yet.

I'm still without anymore iDrive blank screens since the OTA update but I have a nice long journey next week where I'll travel beyond range both directions so that'll be a good test of whether this is fixed or not. Plus I'll have some fast charger fun (are they working, are they occupied, will they take my credit card etc.) on the open road.

So, I've had one more iDrive 'reboot' over the weekend where iDrive screens goes blank while driving and appears to go through a restart cycle and starts up a minute or two later. It happened somewhere different to last time (for ScarlettApple above) so still appears random to me. Amusingly I was also continually getting no server access messages on my drive to work this morning, meaning that the voice control assistant would not understand my controls at all - this makes driving pretty difficult in a car where the buttons have be removed. I'll talk to my dealer as soon as I get a chance.

Interesting development, after a while on calls with BMW assist today including the connected drive specialist team for iDrive, which resulted in me booking my car into the local dealer in 2 weeks time... the source dealer (not the local one) did some digging and suggested that it might be my phone integration that was causing a problem i.e. my phone is not compatible. By the way I shared my iphone model and IOS version with the connected drive team several days back. So, I've unpaired my phone (iPhone 8) and my sons phone (iPhone 13) and then for good order did the hard reset on the system (press start/stop 3 times until is days diagnostic mode on scree, and then press and hold the roll volume button until the iDrive restarts). Hey presto, my voice control is back and the repeated iDrive reboots I experienced this morning stopped (but only on a 20 mile trip). Also interestingly I have a separate post running for pre-conditioning stopping working from My BMW app to car and hey presto that is now working too!!

Not yet conclusive, but can anybody else with the iDrive reboot problem try unpairing their phone and see if that helps them? I'm on a 230+ mile drive tomorrow so will try it without phone paired and see if everything works all day. However, maybe it was just the hard reset that fixed the problem temporarily and it we recur.

I had one iDrive screen go blank issue while I was on a long trip this week, approx. 500 miles over 2 days. So, I'm booked in with a local dealer on 11th September to get it checked out. I still think it has some relation to phone paired as I had it happen immediately on an inbound call at least once. Lets see.
