Has anyone fitted an immobiliser to their IX yet?

trackstar are the only approved tracker/immobiliser but despite being booked in for 2 weeks to be fitted they have just said it’s not compatible with the IX.

They say fitting a ghost or similar “could” invalidate the warranty, a risk I don’t really want to take but they don’t have an alternative!

That’s odd. It’s the Trackstar system that the BMW dealers fit. I’ve got one on my IX50.
You mentioned immobiliser, isn’t the built in BWW alarm system also an immobiliser!

Sorry should clarify, tracker is compatible not the ‘advanced’ which includes the immobiliser key tags to stop key cloning / relay.

The tracker you have should also have the ability to ‘cut out’ remotely by the control room albeit that isn’t compatible with the IX either.

In-built immobiliser is useless if they relay / clone your key and whilst a tracker is better than nothing I’d rather stop the car going in the first place than watch it drive to a container port.

I do have the Trackstar tags/fobs with mine. Never tried to start the car without them to see if it also immobilises! It is the Trackstar S5 that is fitted.

I think they just alert the company if the car is driven without them in the car. Car can still be driven away though. They will just call you to see what’s going on.

All very well but the police are unlikely to bother coming to recover it, just give you a crime reference!

I had one fitted yesterday.

BMW do use trackstar but it’s not the only approved tracker. I had a meta track fitted as the fob is smaller and attachment is a metal ring. The key is such an odd shape the tracker token has to move freely to stop it being force off or damaging the key.

Which metatrak did you have fitted and where did you get told it was approved? 3 different BMW garages all told me only Trackstar and that anything else could invalidate warranty if they think it it may have caused an issue which on a car controlled by the computer I think they would use it to wriggle out of any major issues

S5

It was arranged by Stephen James BMW

Fitted by an independent that BMW identified. BMW provided access to the car during PDI so that I couldn’t drive it away insured.

If you have a specific requirement I can share the fitters details. He was mobile and carried a range of products.

He was expensive and charged £50 more than the tracker company quote to fit it, but I needed a solution for the insurance.
