iX Hitch Update for the US Owners

Hi Fellow and Future Owners,

Good News for everyone who was reconsidering the car due to lacking a hitch in the USA. For people in the USA StealthHitches will soon have one available (end of September 2022).

For me this was almost a deal breaker when I was looking at the car. I called StealthHitches and discussed the options with them. They said that they would need a donor vehicle to design one. A few emails and phone calls back and forth and I was more than happy to volunteer. Especially, that their reputation precedes them.

Special thanks to Richard and the R&D team over there, it was pleasure discussing this project with him and the transparency that he provided of the overall process. I'm very happy that they accommodated my timelines, as it was a ~950 mile drive for me one way. I finally picked up the car August 2nd, and arranged for trip to Atlanta for end of August.

The trip was fun on it's on, with range anxiety, first electric car etc. I will not waste too much time on this, there are quite a few reviews of people taking much longer drives than this, but all I have to say, it was a real pleasure to do over 2k miles in this car over the course of 6 days (made stops to see friends in NC).

About the process:
I dropped off the car Monday 8am, and picked it up Tuesday afterrnoon. I will post a couple of pics of before and after below.
Richard was very straight forward that electronics part of the hitch creation could be an issue, and unfortunately, it was the case.
They were not able to figure out the "turn signal" signal, as it is most like a COM signal and requires decoding.
Given that, currently there is no towing solution, but that's not what was my priority anyway. For me it was the ability to carry my bikes.

The entire install is AMAZINGLY CLEAN. I'm happy to say that the kick opener works without issues, and one wouldn't even know the hitch is there. The attachment itself is completely solid once attached and really feels like a high quality product. There is no surprise here, their hitches really are top notch.

I will leave a placeholder for additional photos/Q&A for the future.

Here is a few words from the manufacture that I'm posting with their approval, and once again a BIG THANK YOU TO THE WHOLE R&D TEAM and Richard:

Key features of the Hitch.

  • Not visible until needed
  • Does not interfere with foot activated tailgate release
  • Connects to the vehicle the same way the BMW hitch connects to the vehicle.
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • No effect on ground clearance
  • Stainless Steel latching block
Here is also a link that I have received from them:

Any further updates on your actual use of the hitch on the iX? Anyone else order or install one yet? (I'm still waiting for the car.) 2022 BMW iX - Rack Only
I have my Stealth hitch on last weekend and used it with my 2” receiver for a 1up bike rack. Went well except for reversing when the iX is VERY upset about an obstacle and seemed to take over braking at one point. I didn’t explore more as I was out of time. I’m in California btw. I also haven’t been able to get the kick under the bumper to open the hatch. Wonder if I need to remove the receiver bit for that.

Does yours actually have the kick to open? I thought that was removed pretty early in the delivery process?

As for braking, that's a HUGE problem if the iX tried to brake if there's a rack. While there might not be a factory hitch state-side, you could certainly use any number of trunk mounted bike holders and should be able to expect the car to still function.

Please keep us informed. Would it matter what driving mode you would be in? Not sure since my car does not get to shore until next week. But no workable rack could be a deal killer. Thanks.

yes the trunk opens based on kick under the bumper

the braking was only when reversing and I was probably going a bit fast ignoring the screaming alarms. Not a showstopper to me but I need to play more

Ugh. That just makes me ill to watch. I wonder if there's any chance they'll provide an option in the future to disable that emergency braking. As mentioned, I know they don't support a hitch since that's after market in the US, but there are trunk mounted options for bike racks that surely could be used on the iX and it would be great if you could temporarily disable the emergency breaking or the audio alerts.
There's an option "Active PDC emergency braking" that should turn off the braking. I found the audio volume control, but no obvious way to completely turn off the sound.

I was looking through the manual and found these sections...but since I don't yet have delivery on my iX I'm not sure whether these will work on the USA version of the iX since it makes mention that in certain jurisdictions they're disabled:
-----

Turning the system on/off manually
Press the P))) button.

▷ On: the LED lights up.
▷ Off: the LED goes out.

If the system is manually switched on when the
reverse gear is engaged, the rearview camera
image is displayed.

Depending on the national-market version, the
system cannot be turned off manually when the
reverse gear is engaged.

Turning off the acoustic warning

Depending on the national-market version, the
acoustic warning can be turned off for an active
parking operation.

After starting the parking operation, press
the icon in the status field of the control display.
The acoustic warning will be turned on again automatically
for the next drive.

Turning off Active Park Distance
Control temporarily

After emergency braking, the function can be
temporarily turned off on the control display.

1. "Obstacle detected. Emergency braking."
2. "Deactivate temporarily"

During continued driving in this surrounding
situation, no further emergency braking will
occur.

The system will be turned on again automatically
for the next drive.

Settings

It is possible to set which areas on the vehicle will
be protected by the system.

1. "MENU"
2. "Vehicle apps"
3. "Driving settings"
4. "Driver Assistance"
5. "Parking"
6. "Active PDC emergency braking"
7. Select the desired setting.

Does it do it with just the hitch but no bikes? Guessing that is the case. Thanks for the helpful info and reassurances.
I had this installed a couple weeks ago. Love it. I wanted to be able to add a cargo rack to haul gasoline containers / generator / camping gear occasionally. Extremely happy with the hitch. Fingers crossed they figure out the turn signal as I’d buy the conversion kit immediately. I’ve not experienced any automatic braking in my setup. No audible alarms when driving forward.

My dealer recommended Stealth Hitches before I placed my order. Said that’s what nearly every BMW owner uses when factory hitches aren’t available. At the time, they were looking for donor vehicles, but by the time my car was delivered, the rack was available. I actually ordered the hitch before I got the car.
Has anyone tried installing stealth hitch on the 2023 iX? I shared the installation manual for stealth hitch with my local installer. They checked with my car which is 2023 model and saw some differences in terms of number and types of screws used on the bumper. They did not remove the bumper to check if there are further differences. I am not sure if the differences are actually between 2022 and 2023 or between the trims as it looks like the car that was used by Stealth Hitches has the base/shadowline trim while mine is sport trim. Would love to hear from those who have installed stealth hitches on the 2023 model. Thanks.
I just found a new option that is $250 less. It is made by TorkLiftcentral in the USA. Has anyone tried or seen it? They quoted me $492 with shipping... and has a 600lbs tongue weight and up to 6000lbs towing and no need of a different connector...... https://torkliftcentral.com/select-ecohitch-style?vid=6725

Anyone?

I spoke with Stealth Hitches a week or so ago. They believe it will fit on a 2023 but they could not confirm. It sounded like they'd like to try an install to confirm.... but mine doesn't arrive until Jan/Feb... hopefully!

Thanks..seems it has good reviews..what i don't like is the way you attached the 2"square attachment. You actually need to screw a big screw compared to just a pushed in.. but $250 more..makes think that i can lay down on the floor and do it.... :) Plus it has a higher tongue capacity and towing (not that im planning to tow anything but you never know..like having 500+ horsepower and only using 100hp in a day to day driving...LOL)
To reignite this old topic...

1) Can anyone confirm if the Stealth hitch will work on 2023 models?
2) Can anyone confirm whether installing a removable hitch receiver destroys the "kick to open" feature?
Here's another competitor that has been mentioned at least once before: https://torkliftcentral.com/bmw-ix-xdrive50-trailer-hitch-by-ecohitchr (I have no personal knowledge about this one)

I can confirm that 2022 stealth hitch fits with the 2023 iX model. The installation instructions need to be revised as the 2023 model has slightly different bumper design (see attached file for comparison).
I can also confirm that the hitch does not interfere / disable the kick to open feature nor trigger the back up sensors
