Sigh. According to BMW's press release today (in other words, if you have an iX that was produced before March 2023, you are currently not able to get these new features or a upgrade to iDrive 8.5.

I thought I was getting their flagship EV back in 2022 where it would get exciting new features over time. Sadly, I was mistaken -->

"To coincide with the ongoing expansion of the all-electric model line-up, new functions are being made available for all BMW i7 and BMW iX variants in summer 2023 that will make enjoying locally emission-free driving pleasure even easier and more convenient.

The BMW Group is the first carmaker in the world to incorporate multi-contract functionality into this new feature. Customers are able to store their individual vehicle electricity contracts from multiple suppliers in digital form in their car, allowing them to use the charging points of these operators with the greatest of ease. The new Multi-Contract Plug & Charge function can be made available via Remote Software Upgrade for all BMW i7 models manufactured since July 2022 and all BMW iX models built since March 2023.

Activating the MAX RANGE function extends the range by a comfortable margin for the journey to an alternative charging point for the high-voltage battery. This is achieved by, among other things, limiting the vehicle’s top speed to 90 km/h (56 mph) at the same time as disabling features such as the climate control, seat heating and steering wheel heating. The new MAX RANGE function can be made available via Remote Software Upgrade for all BMW i7 models manufactured since July 2022 and all BMW iX models built since March 2023

The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX can now also be charged more efficiently thanks to the same upgraded charging software already used in the BMW i7. Here, careful control of the charging rate results in shorter charging times. The new charging software can also be imported into all BMW iX models manufactured since March 2023 via Remote Software Upgrade.

Other cars that can be updated to BMW Operating System 8.5 at a later stage via Remote Software Upgrade: BMW 7 Series from production 07/22; BMW iX from production 03/23; BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7. BMW XM, BMW X5 M, BMW X6 M from production 04/23."

OK I just checked the VIN decoder, mine was built in March

I don't know what you mean 2024 model per se? How do I understand if mine is 2024 model?
Apologies, I may be making assumptions about the rest of the world. In the U.S. vehicles are sold by a model year. The VIN clearly reflects the model year, as would your purchase receipt, title, registration, etc.

disappointing but I think we all saw this coming in the older threads about I drive 8.5 as the cars didn’t have the right hardware version. Can’t say I regret my purchase falling through. The car is still for sale at 8k gbp less than I was going to pay in march!
I searched and found the new head units are listed around $2,600 for the MGU5 (8.5 capable).

Seems BMW should offer an upgrade path at least with purchase if that's all it takes.

Coming from a 30+year IT background I find it somewhat interesting that BMW elected to basically orphan all of us who took the chance and purchased version one of their computer on wheels. I’m pleased with the M60 I’ve been driving since last September and hopefully I can start to see some stability in its operation over the next 2-3 years or perhaps longer assuming that the mechanical aspects of the car continue remain BMW Strong. In the meantime I’ll continue to look at the advances the industry makes in battery and related EV technology. I thought this might be the last car I would own (I’m 72) but now I’m not so sure and BMW will not be the only manufacturer I’d consider.

I believe BMW made the upgrade in conjunction with model year 24 changover. Thus, if you have a 2024 model iX, you should have iDrive 8.5.
I believe this to be true.
My IXM60 was built on 27 February and it’s one of the vey last MY2023’s built and probably going to be frozen as is although I went in with my eyes open.

how do you find out your car is MY2023 and not 2024? I put my VIN in a decoder but there's nothing that says 2023 or 2024

It only confirms the start of production as March 10th

@occam It's a US market thing..

"Automobiles in the United States and Canada are identified and regulated by model year, whereas other markets use production date (month/year) to identify specific vehicles, and model codes in place of the "year" (model year) in the North American make-model-year identifier."

From what I understood - any build prior to 1st March 23 was a MY2023 - anything built post 1st March is an MY2024.
However I’m trying to find a way to determine which head unit is fitted to be totally sure.

there was another contradicting release from BMW where the 8.5 Head Unit won’t be fitted to IX’s until June 23? If that’s true how would they be compatible???

BMW seem to be in a complete mess on this TBH.

Do you guys have a window sticker in new cars with all the details about the car (options, price, model year, etc)?

I think what this means is that as of July IX builds will include 8.5 software pre-installed. However as of March, the hardware required will be fitted, just with the 8.0 software version, and requiring a future upgrade (I assume OTA) to get 8.5.

Nothing will change so long as the complaints are limited to this forum. What will effect change is creating enough noise for BMW to have egg on its face and do something for existing customers. Tesla also has had to be forced to do the right thing by its customers more than a few times, and it always happened because customers created a lot of noise.

So far the musings in this forum will not move BMW's needle one hair.

What are the chances a prominent Youtuber or influencer can take this on? ZERO! Because anyone who reviews cars relies on the generosity of the manufacturers to loan them cars to review. One doesn't get that when one criticizes the vehicle manufacturer.

There are many wealthy and connected people here who own the iX. People who can be influential if they want to be. In fact, there are probably people in this forum who either know Oliver Zipse or know how to contact him.

Fortune favors the brave.

A lot. And to be honest, to have a frozen car is really not state of the century anymore. This was good 10 or 20 years ago, but with all the changes of new Apps, Services, etc. I expect to have them updated/improved/added in my car, if I'm already buying or driving some kind of battery powered computer.

Just double-check here:

e.g. Added Apple Music. Introduced a lot of customization options for the control panels and buttons. Improved the trip planner. Improved (o.k. here have have me and sometimes not improved) the UI, etc. etc.

Ofc not everyone needs it and in the past this was not usual, but today, at least for me, it is expected to get improvements, e.g. new services, ... esp. in this price class.
I use to own a 2014 Model S which i bought in 2017 and the pleasure of seeing games added and the fart feature😂but seriously my vehicle received numerous updates with the 6 years of ownership and not all just bug fixes. pin to drive, joe mode, updated screen layout, updated nav functions, camp mode, pet mode and many others. 2 months before i traded for the iX it in it got a new layout update for climate control . I was hoping BMW did the same or even better.

People shouldn't be camping in their BMWs. Sorry. If you can afford a $100k car you can afford a hotel. I fully advocate against such a feature!

Dog mode, sure, because that has a practical use that doesn't insult the brand. I do not want my control layout updated. NO THANK YOU. That is one of the worst things that Tesla does. As soon as you get used to where things are and how they look, they change it! Nope. It's a car, not Microsoft Word.

While there's no official camping mode, if the driver puts the car in drive, applies park, and climbs into the back, the car will stay on. If the driver opens their door, it won't stay on.

I agree with you about layout. I did prefer the original Tesla screen layout and do prefer the current iX layout when compared to the 8.5 but was just hoping BMW made some meaningful changes to the original lix software through out the years. like easier access too the climate control or the ability to have B mode, sports or efficiencies mode permanently selected. Also was hoping the would add youtube function for watching vids while charging.

Bingo!

BTW, I just got an email from Tesla yesterday, "Barry, we see you sold your Model S recently. Please tell us why and if you're buying another one..." That was fun to fill out, including comments such as "when hell freezes over" and "maybe if you had a new CEO who wasn't a micro-managing, control-freak sociopath..." :D

Dropped the tip to TheVerge: How to tip The Verge: secure email, Signal, SecureDrop, and more

I suggest doing the same and dropping an email with the news tip to your favorite news outlet. I think it won't take a lot of effort, but in the end might result in embarrassing news stories for BMW. You never know.

YesYesYes. When I bought my Model 3, 1/4 of the screen was dedicated to the useless visualization (back then with glitchy jumpy cars). Then they decided to waste almost 1/3 of the screen just for that purpose. I know of no other car where 1/3 of the only screen is wasted like that. I regretted updating the software (not that it was really optional. Some features stopped working without an update).

Hmmm. I think a lot of us would do this upgrade:) or the one to get us 9.0

Agreed -- but is it really that simple? Wouldn't we then be in the untested frankenstein setup.. Who knows what assumptions the head unit is making about the rest of the vehicle.
