Just got an email from SA saying that the iX I was picking up on Tuesday has a new stop sale for an airbag recall? This wasn't there when it arrived earlier in week and isn't showing up on the BMW VIN, so wondering if there is new action on the horizon. Anyone else have info on this?

God, I hope not. My iX is in transit and I’m expecting it this month!

Dec 7th. I knew about the sound generator recall, so I asked them to check and they said it didn't have any open recalls. That was last week, as I'm out of town. Email from SA came today and was something about front airbag.

I just read this on Bimmerpost..

My salesperson said there’s now a stop-sale on all iX’s in the US, as of today. Yikes! Unfortunately, I don’t know more details.

Had planned to pick up my iX 50i today, but there was a stop sale placed on the car just this morning related to the front airbag. There was no known details about the fix for it or when the car would be available. If anyone has any further details, that would be very helpful. Thank you.

EU SafetyGate shows no such recalls. In fact, the only recall I can find is a September 2022 recall for the iX, i4 and i7 concerning a fire hazard for the batteries. I only checked for 2022 and 2023 though.

How is it that the US and AUS seems to be plagued by these issues while we have only one ?

Might be related to the recent Takata airbag recall, over which BMW has no control. Remains to be seen if it impacts all - or any - BMWs (and every other manufacturer that uses Takata airbags, the number of which is huge)....

Honda, Acura Takata Air Bag Recall Update, Do Not Drive | NHTSA

* As an addendum, if you have not installed the SaferCar app from NHTSA on your phone, I recommend you do so now:

That’s not really a new recall, it’s a restatement of the old recall. The cars in it are 20+ years old.
I can guarantee you that the Takata airbag recall has nothing to do with the iX. How do I know? Takata is no longer a company, they went bankrupt long before the iX was ever designed. So there is no way a Takata airbag could be in the iX. They went bankrupt nearly five years ago.

Correct, and a lot of angst here and elsewhere about the "iX airbag recall," as you see on this thread - also old news for the iX:

But there are a number of comments on "Stop Sale" OMGmycarisnotcomingbecauseoftheairbagsandmydealersaidso!!! Perhaps premature. Or not. And certainly sympathies to those - potentially - affected by future and recent recalls, including me with an incoming M60. But I'm not immediately concerned with an airbag recall, beyond what was already addressed in my iX50 in August 2022 at the port...

There doesn’t appear to be any stop or recall at all 😄
The number of people receiving communications from their SA (both here and bimmerpost) begs to differ with your assessment. Are they listed on the BMW recall or NHTSA website? No, they apparently aren't. I've checked both for my VIN and there isn't anything listed. Can BMW issue a stop sale for another reason? I'm sure they can, it's their car until I buy it.

So for whatever reason they want to prevent having to recall my car back and instead are holding it hostage. Fingers crossed that whatever the reason is, it's a software fix. I'm sure we'll get more info tomorrow.

Well it’s bad news after all. My dialogue with my salesperson:

Me:There is some chatter on iXforums threads about a Stop Sale on the iX. However there’s no evidence of it on either the BMW recall or NHTSA sites. I assume it’s just social media chatter and there are no problems?

Reply: I will check on it as soon as I free up. Forums have a way of knowing things as soon (or earlier) than we do. / Then: Yes your car and many others just were placed on stop-sale. I will update once I have more information

Me: Oh oh. How come. That means once it reaches you I can’t take delivery?!

Reply: Not until the stop sale is cleared. It’ll sit at the Baltimore port until fixed. I’ll email you the bulletin.

We received the same stop sale at the point at which our keys were being transferred on Saturday. We had already traded our X5. Pretty crazy. Now we have absolute radio silence. It appears a similar stop sale happened for right hand drive cars that was corrected via software update after 12 or so days. This really is a crazy process, never thought I would have an issue like this with purchasing a vehicle. Honestly the worst part is not being given updates or information.

I hope that they at least gave you a loaner like they did for us. We had traded in our Tesla Model Y after driving 3 hours to the dealership to pick up the car. Same situation where the stop sale came through right before we processed the trade-in. Frustrating situation for sure when no one knows how long it will be before the cars are released
