We have had our ix for a month and yesterday had a problem with the audio.
The system appeared to working as expected, profiles, phone integration etc.. However, there was no audio and the volume rocker (centre console)when scrolled displayed the message ‘no audio source’.

Thought it might be a problem with my profile, but my partner experienced the same issue when she was driving too.

Found a fix and am sure this is likely to impact others.

All you need to do is simply press and hold down the volume rocker dial in the centre console on the bmw ix until the media screen goes black (10-30 seconds) and then allow it to reboot itself, this take a minute or two once the screen has gone black.

Once rebooted the gremlin was resolved and audio restored.

This is super helpful, I had exactly the same issue and had it booked in at the dealership as they didn't know what it was either but your solution has worked - thankyou!

Superb, thanks mate, that sorted it for me. Although, now I can't seem to access the car using digital key via iPhone Wallet

Yeah, the idrive8 does seem glitchy and sure in a software patch or two all will settle down.
I don’t have the digital key, perhaps it needs setting up again as following the restore it might be seen as exuding glitch and fail integrations like this to avoid exploitation?

Thank you, it's sorted now, I didn't have to re-add the key but the software/system just took a while to get all it's ducks in a row. All working fine now.

Same problem, no volume, says No source found. Tried rebooting. That did not resolve it. Any other suggestions. This is a new car, just got it one week ago.
Mine didn’t work as well then I decided to hold volume knob much longer (more than minute I believe.screen went black and it took much longer to come back, people says 30 seconds reboot which did not worked for me ) while driving which solved the issue not sure driving is made any difference or long hold was the trick

The "no audio" issue is a major issue still.
my ix40 was updated to software version 2022/3 (from 2021/11) and at first I thought it has fixed the "no audio" issue, but now the problem is back.
And annoyingly, whereas previously the above-described reboot procedures (ie hold down the volume wheel for 30 seconds) used to fix the program, now it doesn't.
symptoms are :
  • One day all works fine, and then randomly apple car play stops working.
  • then you realize it's not just that apple car play isn't working... anything to do with audio doesn't work.
  • when you try to adjust volume, even when listening to radio, you get the volume bar show up on screen, greyed out with the message "no audio source"
  • and now, new symptom, the system can't be reset. I've been trying for 2 days to get it working again and to no avail.

Curious to know how common this issue is, and if anyone has found better solutions? (Bmw seem
Unable to help).

Same here, tried holding the volume wheel down as described above, didnt work.

Now I have to take time off work to take the vehicle back, £75k and only 5 weeks old, not good!
I mentioned earlier. Mine didin't work as well. While driving I hold much longer until screen goes black and restart took also long (I believe more than minute or two I hold) that solved the problem.

That worked, although I didnt do it whilst moving, I just put the car in 'ready state' (foot on break and press start).

Thanks mate.

I too can confirm that a long hold works IF you have out the car into “diagnostic mode” (push start 3 times). I have found better success with this procedure when the car is being driven. But the fox doesn’t last forever. Sometimes it’s a few days until you have to repeat it.
The first symptom always seems to be that Apple CarPlay stops working, and then you get tbe “no audio source”.
Really wish that BMW could come up with a proper solution for this.

Same happened to my iX M40 delivered end of 4/22 - UK. 'No Audio source' shown on display following extended period of problem free use. Fix that worked was the one described in this thread - press the console knurled volume knob until iDrive 8 resets and screen goes off...

Confirming the same problem and fix here on the other side of the pond… Just got my iX in San Francisco last Wednesday and on Friday the “no source available” problem started. Realized it was not just a CarPlay issue but anything audio related (e.g. default radio wouldn’t play either). Tried the volume knob press-and-hold to reset while parked but it just seemed to turn the system off. Finally fixed the problem by trying press-and-hold while driving as others in this forum had suggested, and once the system reset everything is working again —for now at least!

it happens so often it’s just become an automatic procedure for me. Hold down volume knob and do the reset whilst driving. The system resets quickly, and it always fixes the audio issue and CarPlay connection.
although sometimes the “no audio” messages happen randomly, I’ve also noticed that it is often triggered when the car alert system sounds a warning (eg a pedestrian getting too close, or other notification, etc).
after 6 months of living with this, I continue to be amazed that BMW doesn’t have a fix yet.
