Nope. As a matter of fact in Europe, Tesla has adopted the CCS2 connector in all new cars. One standard for the entire region makes the most sense. This is of course different than the CCS1 connector in NA, but one standard would simplify things as far as compatibilities goes.

Of course, Tesla's connector should be made a standard. CCS are embarrassingly large and unwieldy. Why do you think USB-C is so popular across multiple brands of electronics? Size. When you can have a small, convenient, lightweight connector why would anyone prefer an unwieldy, heavy, awkward Frankenstein?

Non Tesla EVs outnumber Teslas now anyway, so switching all cars to a Tesla standard would make no sense at all now.

There's activity at Tesla preparing to put CCS connectors on Supercharger kiosks in preparation for open up the network for non-Tesla vehicles in NA later this year. Sorry Aptera, this ship has sailed.

I'll bet there are Betamax and Laserdisc players in the meeting rooms at Aptera too.

Just look at it. Small, easy to connect/disconnect, solid, same for DC or AC. Socket can fit behind a very small door. Used today for 250kw in real life and ready for more without plug change. Hoo and opensource documented, potentially free to use to 3rd party

According to all reports the Tesla connector cannot handle 800V systems, which Tesla will enevitably move to (especially for the CT), so they'll be bring out another version at some stage, or just go to CCS -- which is more likely.

There are also problems with cable length and losses due to the design apparently, so the Tesla connector is not quite the slam-dunk you may think it is.

Also, the royalty free patent license has a poison pill: if you use it, you can't sue Tesla for any patent violations for patents you own.

They only do 400v today because this is what they need for their car. The cable limitation is 500amp, and with ~400-450v that mean 250KW. They have 2 pins for power, the other pins are communication and this is where evolution can happen without having to change anything in the plug. They could in that communication expose a future 800v compatibility, and suddently that same plug, that same cable can provide 500KW.

About the cable length, I agree it's short and it's pissing me a lot . But the reason is just cost optimization. A longer cable will resist more to provide that 500AMP, so would need to be bigger to lower the resistance.

Comment about the royalty fee patent license. Totally agree with you, I also think it's a big issue. If that plug would become universal, Tesla would have to be forced to remove that limitation ... or NO-GO.

As an electrical engineer, I must admit I really like this. But my hope is that ONE plug, future proof is winning. CCS is also capable of evolution, I just find the plug big and don't really like the fact that it's not the same for AC or DC charging

IMHO, I think we are just fine with what we have and CCS has already gained enough momentum that no country would justify making the change. Let's focus on adding more infrastructure, keeping the little that is out there, properly working, as it is

It would be nice if there was just one, but having 2 or 3 is also fine if there are adapters. Choosing one is not going to occur as we in the US are not really conformist, and that often results in choices, which we also like. I agree with other posters about getting more infrastructure which works more often. Tesla opening their supercharger network to non Tesla cars is also a good thing, unless you are into coal rolling and blocking chargers.

re: CCS, the creator of the superior design wouldn't share it, so we're gotten stuck with a "VHS" standard again. To me the CCS plug looks like a 1970's Soviet-era design compared to Tesla's, imho.

Coupled with the fact that new EVs - right now, other than Tesla - have CCS ports. And many are rolling out in the next 2-3 years. Manufacturers are not going to do an about-face in the next 5 years. The likelihood is that Tesla will start adding CCS plugs to their Supercharger network (eventually open to all), and perhaps start adding CCS ports to their cars.
