These are the engineering designations for the head units: MGU 18 = HU-H3 MGU 21 = HU-H4 MGU 22 = HU-H5 Only MGU22 going forward will be upgradable to OS 8.5.
I have a 2022 I iX. It is apparently not upgradable to the latest version of Idrive. I’ve owned BMWs since 1998. I love BMW for all that they’ve done with their cars. However, this is the first time that my loyalty is being challenged. I think it is a really poor decision on the behalf of BMW to not support the upgrade on a car that’s only 14 months old. Big mistake bmw!!!

uild date of my IX is 5/23. Has the car in for the roof seal to be replaced and they upgraded me to 8.5. It’s great other than:

1) significant lock/unlock issues with digital key. Now every time I was away the car locks as expected and then immediately unlocks forcing me to open the app and relock it.

2) Seat memory sometimes works when I get in and profile is linked. Sometimes it doesn’t.

3) Navigation AR always defaults back to instrument cluster despite being set to control display over and over.
Any ideas?

You could check some of these settings options relating to AR in the instrument cluster. It's written from the point of view of iDrive 8.0, but I'm assuming the menu hierarchy will be similar:
1. In the Navigation Map screen, go to Settings->Route guidance->Augmented View and select between Off, Instrument Cluster and Control Display
2. In the Main Menu Settings app: Displays->Instrument cluster->Configure content, Augmented View should be deselected.
3. On the steering wheel press the button on the right with a cog in it and press up or down to select something other than the AR view (if that option is even there once you've done 2).

I think this is the new head unit ? (MGU5?). Not sure what the 22 means though. Mine is a 24 manufactured in 03.09.23.

All 2024s get the update, so you don’t have to be worried. But you probably do have to be patient because BMW is taking their sweet time to roll out.

Did you see what happened with the Rivian OTA update last week? It was a nightmare. So I think it’s better for BMW to take their time and be careful before they push out major updates like 8.5 to us.

That model designation didn't look like an iX. Is your car a 5 series or X5 maybe? If so, have a look here for BMWBlog's summary on which cars will have 8.5 from the factory, and which can get an upgrade (tl;dr X5: probably, 5-series: doesn't look like it?)
Here Are All the BMW Models Getting iDrive 8.5 With QuickSelect

"Here are the models that are being updated to iDrive 8.5:
BMW 7 Series, BMW iX, and BMW i4 models build after July 2023
BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW XM, BMW X5 M, and BMW X6 M models built after August 2023
New BMW M Models will iDrive 8.5 but without the new graphical interface.
All BMW 7 Series (after 07/22), iX (after 03/23), and BMW X5, X6, X5 M and X6 M (after 04/23) are eligible for over the air upgrades to the newest iDrive."

Those anyone know how to keep my BMW X5 unlocked when in the garage ??? . It is driving me crazy going in the garage without the keys . Thanks Mike
Turn off your Comfort access setting for automatic locking (Lock when walking away - mine is set to lock) under Doors and Windows, but then you'll need to manually lock your doors when not in your garage (no GPS "lock/unlock" options) - iD8:

Thanks for the info but would like to know when I do get the 8.5 will there be a separate on off for the garage park with the locking of the car or not . Thanks Mike

My June 2023 build 2024 iX xDrive 50 just got upgraded too OTA. No issues I can tell. Climate control is better (easier to activate seat warmers). Don't see anything worse yet. Hopefully some other things are better.
